What a Social Investigation Includes
A Social Investigation under Florida Statute §61.20 is a structured, fact‑finding process designed to assist the court in evaluating what parenting arrangements are in the best interests of the child. While each case is unique, a Social Investigation may include:
Parent and caregiver interviews Interviews with each parent or caregiver to understand family history, current circumstances, and each party’s perspective regarding the child’s needs and proposed parenting plan.
Child interviews, when appropriate Developmentally appropriate conversations with the child, when ordered and suitable, to gather information about the child’s experiences, routines, and adjustment.
Home visits Observation of each parent’s home environment to assess safety, stability, and the suitability of the setting for the child.
Collateral contacts Contact with relevant third parties, such as teachers, counselors, medical providers, or other professionals who have direct knowledge of the child or family.
Records review Review of school, medical, mental health, and other relevant records to provide context and corroborate information.
Parent–child observations Observation of interactions between the child and each parent, when appropriate, to assess communication, responsiveness, and the quality of the relationship.
Risk and safety considerations Identification of any reported concerns related to substance use, domestic violence, mental health, or other factors that may affect the child’s safety and well‑being.
