Guardian ad Litem (GAL) Services

The Guardian ad Litem (GAL) is a neutral professional appointed under Chapter 61, Florida Statutes, to assist the Court in matters involving the best interests of minor children. The GAL operates as an investigative and evaluative resource for the Court and does not serve as an advocate for either parent. The GAL’s role is limited to fact‑finding, observation, collateral contact, and the development of recommendations based on the child’s needs, safety, and welfare.

The GAL functions independently of the parties and provides information to the Court that may assist in resolving disputes related to parenting, timesharing, communication, decision‑making, and other child‑related concerns. The GAL’s authority is defined by the Court’s order of appointment, including any limitations or specific issues identified for review.

Scope of Guardian ad Litem Services

The Guardian ad Litem conducts a structured, neutral review of child‑related issues identified in the Court’s order of appointment. The GAL’s scope may include interviews, observations, collateral contacts, and document analysis necessary to assist the Court in determining the best interests of the child. The GAL evaluates relevant information, identifies concerns affecting the child’s welfare, and prepares findings and recommendations for judicial review.
